When you are not prepared, these things happen

I was watching a documentary the other day on the Shackleton expedition to the Antarctic. It is a riveting story of human will and survival.

Unfortunately it was not a story of canine survival, as before the whole thing was over the crew had to eat the dogs to survive. These dogs were loved, and there exists pictures and film of the crew lovingly interacting with the Canadian sled dogs that accompanied them on the expedition. The men had to make the hard choice to live or die on the shoulders of their canine friends.

When it comes to the more modern era, many people take better care of their pets than they do themselves. All manner of money is spent making a dog or cat’s life one of luxury, while possibly ignoring the fact that if something were to happen, and you had to self quarantine for a month or so, there may be no food available in the house.

Most likely it wouldn’t actually come to eating a beloved pet, and you say you would never do it under any circumstances anyway. But I will point out to several stories of lifeboat survivors, months at sea. The stories that have come from them through the years are dreadful.

They tell of drawing lots to see who would be killed to feed the rest of the people on the small boat. This happened more…
